Mandolin Machine Heads
Standard and Reverse Gear Machine Heads Explained
The terms standard and reverse gear machine heads refer to the placement of the
button post relative to the gear. Pictured below we show a standard set and a
reverse gear set.
Standard tuners have the button shaft placed above the gear. This is the standard
placement for all machine heads regardless of instrument type.
Reverse gear tuners have the button shaft placed below the gear. This style is
commonly seen on mandolins, especially arched-top mandolins.
Standard and Reverse Gear tuners are not compatible. You must use the same kind of tuner
when replacing them on an existing instrument.
